Jonathan Blankenship has decided to spend the holidays with his half-brother, Gregory, and wife Glee Blankenship. At the same time, to spend time with his two best friends, Melvin Steffington and Ms. Mary Arbuckle.

Jonathan wants to see his mother join them for Christmas, too. Jonathan’s mother hadn’t been very nice to Gregory, but she has since relented. Now Gregory has harsh feelings about her. Could he convince him to let bygones be bygones?

Glee was busy with her own strategies, if you will, with a bee in her bonnet of getting Jonathan to realize that he’s in love with his good friend, a certain Ms. Mary Arbuckle. Ms. Arbuckle had also been friends of Glee’s since they had attended Miss Worth’s School for Young Ladies together.

Ms. Arbuckle knew her chances of an advantageous marriage or even a marriage at all would not come her way. She saw herself a woman of no particular beauty. With her mother widowed, in no possession of wealth, she had settled on the idea of spinsterhood. Within herself, however, she craved the times Jonathan would come to Bath. They were the best of friends telling each other everything. Both have excellent minds and they spend hours together discussing various essays, poems and treatises.

Glee put all her forces in play to trap Jonathan. Ms. Arbuckle didn’t like playing games, but if she could marry her best friend, wouldn’t she be the happiest of women?

My Thoughts: Indeed, this was a sweet story. Jonathan was rather a simpleton, really. His life had been so consumed with thinking, that his brain didn’t register that Ms. Arbuckle was a woman. He’d never seen her as anyone else than his friend. She was always very well covered, that is, until Glee got a hold of her. Shocked, but interested, Jonathan catches the bait and is pulled in!

This is a light-hearted, delightful Christmas story where all works out in the best way for everyone.
