About the Story: When a villain bent on revenge threatens their second chance at finding happiness, Christian and Katherine must fight against events from the past if they want a future together. A Regency novella.

Christian Fallon, the Duke of Aubrey, has never forgotten the woman he fell in love with six years earlier. Forced by his father to marry another, he endured a miserable marriage. Now a widower, he arrives in London with the intention of vanquishing his enemy, a man who is set on destroying Christian’s family. When he finds that his enemy is courting the woman Christian tried for years to forget, he conceives of a plan to take everything away from the man, including Katherine, the widowed Duchess of Westervly.

Katherine has intentionally caught the eye of the Viscount of DeWynter, a man she can barely tolerate, but her stepmother is missing, and clues lead to the viscount as having a hand in her disappearance. When Christian appears on the scene, she is torn between the two men; Christian, who has held her heart all these years, and DeWynter, whom she believes can lead her to her stepmother.

My Thoughts:  Even though a novella, the story had several characters, all well fleshed out, providing an exciting, suspenseful and emotional read.  For Christian loved Katherine, his heart’s desire.  An emotion he buried deeply so he wouldn’t burn for her.  Death of both spouses, frees them.  Did Christian have to win her heart from a dead husband to rekindle what they once had?  Katherine knew Christian’s marriage choice had been one she could not fault him for.  However, it had nearly destroyed her. Could she consider loving again?  Or had she ever stopped?

Christian was focused.  He needed to do two things.  Make Katherine love him again and kill the bastard DeWynter.  We learn the reason why he needs to kill DeWynter.  Katherine also has an interest in DeWynter for she is fighting her own battle—clues lead her to him.  What has he done with her step-mother?

Katherine deserved to find a happy ever after.  She was a woman of rare strength and courage not willing to give in to seemingly impossible odds.

Moments of levity are found with character, Reeves, Christian’s valet, also known in an earlier life as an Irishman of some cunning, whose deportment was nothing but suiting an English valet.  An excellent addition to the list of characters, he not only made me smile, but had his own brand of honor—a unique man with a unique set of skills.

I also thought Kensington and Daventry were two chaps any duke would be proud to have as friends.  They, too, had a jovial side of them, often easing the tension of some bad situations. Another secondary, but important character, was Kit, Katherine’s mangy, rescue dog, a hero himself.

This story ran a fast clip, keeping me riveted to what had to be done.  Kathryn’s need to find her step-mother with leads to DeWynter, a man of abdominal character; Christian needing to regain Kathryn’s love, an obsessed duke if ever there was one (with a heart of gold) AND kill DeWynter for death of his brother-in-law and rape of his sister.

Great uplifting story, with abundant action and love connecting and reconnecting all around.
